Glossary

All of my frequently-used jargon. Explained in one place.

  • ACSM - (Abbreviation) American College of Sports Medicine

  • Aerobic - Requiring oxygen. Aerobic exercise is of low-to-moderate intensity so that the energy demands can be met by the aerobic energy system.

  • Anabolism - Constructive metabolism; when more complex molecules, proteins and tissues are “built”

  • Anaerobic - In the absence of oxygen. Past a certain intensity, the body is so longer able to meet the energy demands of exercise through aerobic means. Anaerobic pathways can typically produce energy at a faster rate, but this is not sustainable for long lengths of time.

  • Carb - A shortened written form of carbohydrate (informal)

  • CHO - A shortened written form of “Carbohydrate”

  • IOC - (Abbreviation) International Olympic Committee

  • ISSN - (Abbreviation) International Society of Sports Nutrition

  • Lipids - Another name for fats

  • RDA - (Abbreviation) Recommended Daily Allowance. Typically used in reference to nutrition.

  • RPE - (Abbreviation) Rating of Perceived Exertion. This is how hard you perceive yourself to be working on a scale of 1 (complete rest) to 10 (Maximal exercise).
